Born in 1894 in Sunderland, he was commissioned, as a Second Lieutenant, in January 1915 and joined the 15th (Service) Battalion DLI. He was wounded in the Battle of Arras in May 1917 and then won the Military Cross for his devotion to duty on Passchendale Ridge in October 1917, when he took over as Adjutant after both the Commanding Officer and Adjutant had been wounded. Charles Herbert was killed in action on 27 May 1918 and is buried in Hermonville Military Cemetery. According to a family story, the bullet that killed him went through a silver cigarette case in his breast pocket before piercing his heart.
